What does powder coating wheels involve?

Powder coating is a finishing process that involves applying a dry powder to the Alloy Wheels. This is then heated at high temp in an oven to melt and bond the powder to the surface. Here is a step-by-step explanation of the powder coating process on wheels, from powder coating gun to OEM finished wheels:

  1. Surface Preparation: The alloy wheel is first cleaned and prepared for coating. This may involve sandblasting and chemical treatment to remove any paint, old powder coat, dirt, or other contaminants that may be present.
  2. Powder Coating Gun: The powder coating gun is loaded with the dry powder and connected to an air compressor. The gun charges the powder particles with an electrostatic charge, allowing them to be attracted to the grounded wheel.
  3. Application of Powder: The powder coating gun is used to evenly apply the powder to the alloy wheels. The powder particles adhere to the metal surface, forming a uniform layer.
  4. Curing: The wheels with the applied powder coating is then heated in an oven to cure the powder. The temperature and time of the curing process can vary depending on the type of powder being used and the size of the alloy wheels been coated.
  5. Cooling: Once the curing process is complete, the wheels are than removed from the oven and allowed to cool. This allows the powder coating to harden and bond to the surface of the wheels.
  6. Inspection: The finished product is inspected to ensure that the powder coating has adhered evenly and that there are no defects or imperfections in the coating.

Overall, the wheel powder coating process is a fast and efficient way to achieve a durable and attractive finish to wheels. It offers a range of benefits over traditional wet painting, including increased durability, lower environmental impact.

Wheel Powder Coating – How do we do it?

Firstly, At SMART Paintworx we have to fully chemically strip the wheels of all old paint/powder coat, dirt and grime. So into the acid they go! This can take anywhere from 2 hours to 12! Once we have the wheels fully stripped and down to bare aluminium or steel, we then mechanically clean the full wheel. We do this using our sandblaster! Then we move onto the fun stuff… Powder coating!

When spraying the powder coat, an electrostatic charge causes the powder particles to stick together and form an even layer over your wheels. The process of powder-coating takes approximately 2 days on average. Your wheels can be done in any colour, including a metallic finish. We then apply an additional clear coating to protect the powder coat from chipping or scratching.

Powder Coating, being more durable than traditional paint has many other benefits. It doesn’t chip or scratch easily. There is an increased glossiness to some finishes that traditional paints can’t achieve. And the beauty of it all is that you can customise the wheels to the look of your car with hundreds of colour choices!

Colour Change Alloy Wheels

Colour change alloy wheels are a very popular choice. The powder coat we use is automotive grade so it’s tough enough to withstand the elements and lasts for years without fading or chipping away.

What is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) factory finish? This refers to the paint or coating applied to a product during its manufacturing process. It is the standard finish applied by the manufacturer and is designed to provide a consistent, high-quality appearance. The finish is typically applied using specialized equipment and techniques to ensure a durable and long-lasting coating. The goal of an OEM factory finish is to provide a product that meets the manufacturer’s quality standards and is visually appealing to the consumer.

Powder Coated Wheels and Aftercare

After powder coating your wheels, it is essential to take care of them to maintain their appearance and protect them from future damage. Here are some tips for aftercare:

  1. Regular cleaning: Wash your wheels regularly with a mild detergent and water to remove any dirt or debris that can cause damage to the powder coating.
  2. Protection: Use a high-quality wheel wax or sealant to protect the finish from environmental contaminants such as brake dust, road grime, and UV rays. Apply the wax or sealant using a foam applicator pad and buff it with a microfiber towel.
  3. Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid using harsh chemicals such as acid-based wheel cleaners, brake cleaners, or degreasers on your powder coated wheels as they can damage the finish.
  4. Avoid high-pressure water: Do not use high-pressure water when cleaning your powder coated wheels.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you’re looking to upgrade your wheels, powder coating is a more durable, environmentally friendly, and customizable option than wet painting. So why settle for a standard paint job when you can have a powder-coated finish that will turn heads wherever you go?
